Private Mat Pilates in Ridgewood, Queens

Build deep core strength, better posture and real control, or rebuild after an injury, with one-on-one mat Pilates from a STOTT-trained instructor with a degree in kinesiology.

Amelia Heintzelman, private Pilates instructor in Ridgewood, Queens

Why private Pilates

Pilates built around your body, not a class plan

In a group class you follow the sequence. In a private session the sequence follows you. Amelia watches how you breathe, stabilize and move, then chooses exercises and cues that address what your body actually needs.

Her approach draws on STOTT Pilates principles, a B.S. in Kinesiology and more than a decade as a professional dancer. Sessions move with flow and breath, and expect sequences that feel spherical rather than mechanical.

  • Deep core strength and pelvic floor connection
  • Posture, spinal mobility and back care
  • Balanced, functional strength for daily life and sport
  • Cross-training for dancers, runners and climbers

Injury prevention & recovery

Pilates for injury recovery and prevention

Amelia experienced traumatic injuries as a teenager and used somatic movement to regain agency in her body. That experience, her kinesiology degree and STOTT Pilates' rehabilitation roots shape how she works with injured and injury-prone bodies.

Sessions start gently and progress as your body is ready. You'll learn to move with awareness, build support around the injured area and return to the things you love with less fear of re-injury. If you're working with a doctor or physical therapist, Amelia is glad to follow their guidance.

FAQ

Private Pilates: common questions

What is the difference between mat Pilates and reformer Pilates?

Mat Pilates uses your own body weight, gravity and small props rather than a machine. It builds the same deep core strength and control, and because it needs no equipment it works just as well in the studio, at home or online.

What is STOTT Pilates?

STOTT Pilates is a contemporary approach to the original Pilates method that incorporates modern exercise science and rehabilitation principles, with an emphasis on neutral spine and joint stability.

I'm recovering from an injury. Can private sessions help?

Often, yes. Amelia has a B.S. in Kinesiology and her own history of recovering from serious injury. Sessions focus on rebuilding strength, stability and confidence gradually. If you are under the care of a doctor or physical therapist, she is happy to work alongside their guidance.

Is Pilates a replacement for physical therapy?

No. Private sessions are not medical treatment. They work well after or alongside physical therapy, helping you rebuild strength, stability and confidence once you have been cleared to exercise.

Can Pilates help prevent injuries?

Yes. Pilates builds core stability, balanced strength and body awareness, which are key to moving well and reducing the risk of strain, especially for dancers, runners and active people.

How often should I do private Pilates?

Once a week is a great rhythm for steady progress. Twice a week builds strength faster, and every other week works well if you are also practicing on your own between sessions.

Do I need any Pilates or yoga experience?

No. Private sessions start from where you are. Complete beginners, people returning after a long break and experienced movers all get a session built around their body and goals.

Where do sessions take place?

In Amelia's space in Ridgewood, Queens (near Putnam Ave & Woodward Ave), in your home in Ridgewood, Bushwick, Williamsburg, or online over video.

How much does a private session cost?

Studio sessions are $125 for 45 minutes, house visits are $150 for 45 minutes and online sessions are $100 for 45 minutes. Each additional 15 minutes is $25, and sessions can run up to 90 minutes. Small groups of 2–3 people are the same rate as a private session.
